We're finally off! Dad and I spent the night at Sarah's apartment in Athens in preparation for a full day of hiking. He's going to the do the first three days with me to see just what is that I'm in for on the trail. After a little drive we made it to Amicolola Falls State Park, the place to register and begin the approach trail to Springer Mountain. So we registered for our respective hikes, said our goodbyes to Sarah, and began the surprisingly steep hike up the falls. The approach trail is 8.8 miles long before you've even officially begun the AT and it really was a decent hike. Luckily we had great weather the whole way and got onto the AT with some time to spare.
We had made it about 4 miles in when my heels started to hurt and we decided to call it a day. There was a small unoccupied campsite called Three Forks where we set up for the night at about 6:30. By 8 we had set our tents, made a fire, cooked dinner, hung our food and were headed to bed. All-in-all I think it was a successfull first day out.
