We woke to an equally great sunrise up on Cheoah Bald and hit the trail early knowing that we were going just to Cable Gap, 14 miles away. I hiked with Kelley today and kept her going at a good pace. We all had lunch at Stecoah Gap right before a huge climb called Jacob's Ladder. The climb was about .5 miles long and about 700' vertically. It was incredibly hot and no fun at all. We made pretty good time afterward though due to easier terrain into the shelter. There were even spots for all of us in the 5-man shack where we stayed with Big Ben, a 14 year-old hiking the AT with Coach, his 17 year-old brother. They're about as bickering and annoying as you'd expect some kids with no supervision to be.
