Dave, Kelley, and I were out of the shelter by 8 and headed over the dam when the wind and rain started to pick up. The rest of our group (Ben, West, Austin, and Veronica) had gone into town to stay with a friend of West's for the night. The threatening weather made us a little uneasy but we kept going and hoped for the best. Within the hour we were trekking uphill out of the gap through a mixture of rain, sleet, and snow with winds kicking up to about 40 miles an hour. Not to mention the fact that it was about 40 degrees outside and because of our resupply we were carrying about the heaviest packs of our trips. We met up with Arrow, a guy in his late 20s from Pennsylvania, and practically ran the last 4 miles to the shelter just to stay warm.
By the time we arrived we were soaked completely to the bone and freezing cold on the edge of hypothermia. There were 6 or so thru-hikers who had stayed at the shelter taking a zero because of how terrible the weather was. The shelter that's intended to sleep 12 is now packed with 22 people and we're all hoping for better weather tomorrow.
